Municipiul Târgu Jiu s-a dezvoltat pe malurile râului Jiu, în Depresiunea Târgu Jiu. Râul are 339 km lungime, se formează prin confluența dintre Jiul de Est și Jiul de Vest lângă Petroșani și se varsă în Dunăre la Zăval, cu un debit mediu de 96 m³/s și un bazin de recepție de 10.080 km pătrați. Conform listei ANPA a habitatelor contractate (23.02.2026), Râul Jiu (Bumbești Jiu - Țânțăreni, 125 km) este contractat de AJVPS GORJ: pe lângă permisul ANADSPA (fosta ANPA) e nevoie de permisul asociației.
