4. Techniques to start with

Float, bottom and spinning -- when to use them and how to strike

Float fishing

The best school. The float shows you exactly what the fish is doing: a twitch, a slow dip or a sudden run. Set the depth so the bait sits close to the bottom (most coarse fish feed there) and shot the float until only the tip shows above the surface.

Bottom and feeder fishing

The rig sits on the bottom, with a lead or a feeder that gathers the fish right next to the hook. The bite shows on the rod tip or on an indicator. It's the basic technique for carp and at long range, where a float can't be seen.

Spinning

You cast and continuously retrieve an artificial lure, imitating a small fish. You go looking for the predator rather than waiting for it: move after 10-15 casts without result and vary the retrieve speed. The most active technique, and the easiest to learn in winter and autumn.

Striking and playing the fish

  • Strike with a firm but short movement of the rod, not by yanking with your whole body.
  • Keep the rod up and let the reel's drag work when the fish pulls; don't hold the line locked.
  • Don't rush: a tired fish comes to the bank on its own. Use the landing net, don't lift the fish by the line.
  • If you want to release it, keep it out of the water as little as possible (see 'Rules and common sense').
