Frequently asked questions about fishing and RoFish
Short answers to what anglers ask us most often -- about fishing and about RoFish.
About fishing
What's the best time to fish?
Dawn and dusk, in almost any season; in summer, also at night. “Sunrise, sunset and good hours” shows you the day's windows for your location.
Which bait should I use?
To start with: sweetcorn and worms -- they catch almost any coarse fish. For carp: boilies and pellets; for predators: lures or small fish (where allowed).
What gear should I get to start with?
A feeder rod or a float pole, a size 3000-4000 reel, 0.20-0.25 mm line, hooks and leads. Details in the “Beginner's guide” and the “Packing list”.
Why aren't the fish biting?
Most often: water too cold or too warm, a sudden pressure change, noise on the bank or too much groundbait. Check “Water temperature” and “Barometric pressure”.
Can I eat fish from any water?
Avoid visibly polluted waters, those downstream of industrial discharges and fish that look sick. Cook fish thoroughly (parasites are destroyed by boiling and frying).
How long can I keep fish alive?
On public waters, only within the legal daily limit; on private lakes, according to the rules -- many forbid keepnets. Released fish go back immediately.
How do I choose a spot on a new lake?
Look for features: reeds, fallen trees, depth changes, inflows. In wind, the bank the wind is blowing onto is often better.
About RoFish
Does RoFish cost anything?
No. The app and the website are free for anglers.
How do I find a lake near me?
From “Search” (filter by county or distance, price, species, accommodation) or from the map, under “Map of fishing spots”.
Some information about a lake is wrong.
On the lake's page, tap “Update fishing spot”. Changes are checked by a moderator before they appear.
My lake isn't on RoFish.
You can add it yourself, from “Add fishing spot”; it appears after approval. If you're the owner, write to us from “Contact” and we'll register you as the lake's owner.
How do I book a spot?
At lakes with online booking, directly from the lake's page; for the others, call the number on the page.
How do I keep track of my sessions?
With the “Fishing journal”: sessions, catches and yearly totals, also useful for reporting your catches to ANADSPA (formerly ANPA).
Is my data public?
The catches you post in the feed are public; your fishing journal is yours alone. Details in the Privacy policy.
Questions about permits (ANADSPA, formerly ANPA, associations, the Delta) are under “Fishing permit” → “Frequently asked questions”.
