Night fishing
Where it's allowed, what to take and how to fish safely after sunset.
Is it allowed?
- On public waters the law doesn't generally forbid night fishing; it can be banned by the association's rules, the nature park's rules or the border regime (on the Prut, daytime only).
- On private lakes the lake's rules decide -- many allow it only with the 24 h fee.
- On each water's page in RoFish, the “Night fishing” row tells you what we found.
What to take
- A headlamp with a red light (it doesn't blind you or scare the fish), plus a spare flashlight.
- Audible or visual bite alarms and starlites for the rod tip or float.
- Warm clothes even in summer (it gets much colder by the water at night), a rain cape, mosquito spray.
- The landing net, pliers and mat ready next to the rods, so you don't have to search in the dark.
Tips
- Set up your pitch and prepare the spot while it's still light; remember where the snags in the water are.
- Don't point your flashlight at the water or at your neighbours; turn off the light while you wait.
- Catfish, carp and zander are often more active at night, especially in summer heatwaves.
- Don't fish alone at night on rivers or from steep banks.
