Zander and perch brought up from deep water
Fish brought up quickly from deeper than ~10 m can have an inflated swim bladder (barotrauma).
mind the depth
Steps
- 1
Bring the fish up from the depths more slowly, so it has time to adjust to the pressure.
- 2
Remove the hook quickly and put it back in the water immediately.
- 3
If it floats on its side and can't dive, hold it in the water head-down for a few seconds and push it gently towards the depths.
- 4
Don't puncture the swim bladder unless you know exactly how: without experience, you'll do more harm than good.
Tips
- If you keep catching fish with barotrauma, move to shallower water: it's a sign you're bringing them up from too deep.
- Zander have small sharp teeth and spines on the dorsal fin: hold it under the chin or use the landing net.
