Wels catfish
The largest fish in our waters: big specimens should stay in the water as much as possible.
thick glove
What you need
- Thick glove (a catfish's teeth are like sandpaper)
- Large mat or long sling
Steps
- 1
Tire the catfish next to the bank or boat, then grab its lower jaw with your gloved hand (thumb inside, the other fingers underneath).
- 2
Support the body with your other hand; a big catfish is never lifted by the mouth alone.
- 3
Remove the hook in the water if possible; otherwise on a large, wet mat.
- 4
To revive it, hold it by the jaw and the tail, head into the current, until it starts pulling away by itself -- with catfish it can take a few minutes.
Tips
- Don't lay it on grass or stones: its scaleless skin is easily damaged.
- A big catfish held vertically, hanging by its mouth, can break its jaw -- hold it horizontally.
