What you need

  • braid 0.12-0.18 mm
  • 7-12 kg steel/titanium trace, 20-30 cm, or 0.60-0.80 mm fluorocarbon
  • strong snap + swivel
  • 8-15 cm lures

Steps

  1. 1

Tie the trace to the braid through a swivel (Palomar on the braid) or use a trace with a swivel already fitted.

  2. 2

Clip the lure to the trace's snap; for crankbaits, use a free-moving snap or a Rapala knot on fluorocarbon.

  3. 3

Choose the lure by depth: surface/1-2 m crankbaits near weed, jerkbaits and spoons deeper.

  4. 4

Vary the retrieve: steady, with pauses, with twitches; change often until you find what the pike wants.

  5. 5

Strike firmly and keep the line taut; use a landing net or boga grip, not your hand, when unhooking.

Tips

  • Thick fluorocarbon (0.70+) is less visible than wire, but check it after every fish: the teeth scratch it.
