Romanian darter – protected species, fishing prohibited
Romanian darter (asprete) · Romanichthys valsanicola

Size: 10–12 cm
- The asprete (Romanichthys valsanicola) is a freshwater fish, 10–12 cm long, of the perch family, from fast mountain waters with stony beds in Romania.
- In the past it was found in the mountain reaches of the Argeș river and its tributaries: the Vâlsan and the Râul Doamnei.
- Today its range is limited to a 1 km stretch of the upper Vâlsan river upstream of the village of Brădetu, and it is in danger of extinction.
- It has an elongated body, roughly cylindrical at the front, laterally compressed at the rear and covered in relatively large ctenoid scales.
Rules on natural waters
Release it immediately
A protected species: fishing for it is forbidden all year in natural waters.
The rules above are for natural waters (rivers, lakes, the Danube), where you also need a permit. On a private lake the lake's rules apply: many are catch & release or have their own limits.
