About this spot

Lacu Mare is on the Meledic Plateau, a karst plateau on salt in the Subcarpathians of Buzău County, about 56-60 km from Buzău town, between 424 and 607 m altitude, bounded to the south by the Slănic River. The lake has 0.72 hectares and a maximum depth of 20 m; the water is warm at the bank but suddenly cools just one metre away. The area also hosts the 6S Meledic Cave, one of the longest salt caves in the world. The plateau is a nature reserve: the fishing regime is checked with the custodian of the protected area; the fish species are not documented.
