Carp on the method feeder: rig, groundbait and steps

The method feeder is a flat feeder you press groundbait onto, with the bait embedded right in it. The hooklength is short, 8-12 cm, so a fish that takes the bait hooks itself against the weight of the feeder.
It's the simplest effective technique for carp and big Prussian carp, especially on private fisheries, where the fish are used to pellets and groundbait.
Species: Carp · Prussian carp
What you need
- Rod: a 3.3-3.6 m feeder or method rod with a medium action, or a light carp rod.
- Reel: size 4000-5000, with a well-set drag: carp pull hard on the first run.
- Line: 0.22-0.28 mm monofilament.
- Rig: a 20-60 g inline method feeder, an 8-12 cm hooklength of 0.18-0.22 mm line, and a size 8-12 hook with a hair or a pellet band.
- Accessories: a groundbait mould, a rod rest, a fine-mesh landing net and an unhooking mat for carp.
Baits
- Method mix or 2 mm micro pellets, dampened.
- 6-10 mm wafters (semi-buoyant baits) in bright colours: the most popular bait on the method.
- Small boilies, hook pellets and corn, sweet or artificial.
When to fish
- Most productive from late spring to autumn, when the water is warm.
- In summer, morning and evening, or during the day when it's windy; on private fisheries, regularly fed carp bite at midday too.
- In cold water: a small feeder, little groundbait and small baits.
Where are you fishing
- On private fisheries: near islands, reeds and the far bank, on plateaus with a clean bottom.
- On big waters: areas 1.5-3 m deep, with a firm bottom.
- Avoid deep silt and thick weed on the bottom: the feeder sinks in and the bait can't be seen.
Step by step
- 1
Dampen the groundbait. Add water gradually and leave the groundbait or pellets for 10-15 minutes; they should stick together when squeezed and break down in the water within 1-3 minutes.
- 2
Load the feeder. Put the bait on the hair or in the band, place it in the bottom of the mould, fill with groundbait, press the feeder into the mould and pop it out.
- 3
Cast to the clip. Always cast to the same spot and feather the line with your finger before it hits the water, so the rig lands straight on the bottom.
- 4
Set the rod down. Put the rod on the rest, tighten the line slightly and set the drag so a carp can take line on a sudden run.
- 5
Keep the rhythm. Recast every 3-5 minutes to begin with, then every 5-10 minutes; frequent casting draws the fish in.
- 6
Playing the fish. On a bite (the tip jerks round or drops back), lift the rod in one smooth movement and let the drag do the work; draw the fish into the landing net.
Common mistakes
- Groundbait that's too dry (it falls off on the cast) or too wet (it won't break down).
- A hooklength that's too long: the fish takes the bait without getting hooked.
- Casts so hard they break the groundbait off the feeder.
- Scattered casts that don't hold the fish in one place.
Rules on natural waters
Carp
Minimum size: 35 cm
Species closed season: none, only the general closed season
Prussian carp
Minimum size: 15 cm
Species closed season: none, only the general closed season
General closed season: 9 April - 7 June (the periods differ on border waters and in the Danube Delta)
Daily limit: At most 5 kg of fish per day, or a single fish if it's over 5 kg.
The rules above are for natural waters (rivers, lakes, the Danube), where you also need a permit. On a private lake the lake's rules apply: many are catch & release or have their own limits.
For information only, not guaranteed legal advice. There are many local exceptions (Danube Delta, border waters, catch-and-release sections) not covered here. Always check the official ANADSPA (formerly ANPA) source before fishing.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the hooklength on the method?
Usually 8-12 cm; shorter with small pellets, and up to 15 cm when the fish are wary.
Method or a hair rig with boilies?
The method keeps you busy with frequent casts and is very good on well-stocked fisheries; boilies on a hair rig are for long sessions, big fish and heavy baiting.
Does the method work on rivers?
In slow current, yes, with a heavier feeder; in strong current, the classic feeder is a better fit.
What is the minimum size for carp, and when is the closed season?
In natural waters, the legal minimum size is 35 cm; smaller fish must be released. The general closed season also applies on natural waters: 9 April - 7 June.
