Jigging for zander

Zander stay close to the bottom, on rocks, holes and channel edges, and hunt mostly in low light. The jig (a lead head with a soft lure) is hopped along the bottom, exactly where the fish are.

It's the main zander technique on the Danube, on reservoirs and on big lakes. It needs a line that feels every touch: thin braid and a fast rod.

Species: Zander

What you need

  • Rod: a 2.4-2.7 m fast-action spinning rod, 10-35 g; in strong current, 15-50 g.
  • Reel: size 2500-4000.
  • Line: 0.08-0.12 mm braid, for sensitivity.
  • Leader: 1-1.5 m of 0.25-0.35 mm fluorocarbon.
  • Jig head: 7-28 g, with a 1/0-3/0 hook, depending on depth and current.

Baits

  • 7-12 cm shads and twisters.
  • Natural colours by day in clear water; white or chartreuse in murky water and in the evening.

When to fish

  • Autumn and early winter are best: zander gather in the holes.
  • At dawn, at dusk and on overcast days; in summer, mostly early in the morning.
  • Check the closed seasons below: zander have their own closed season in spring.

Where are you fishing

  • The Danube: groynes, rock spurs, holes and the seam between the current and slack water.
  • Reservoirs, channels and big lakes with a hard, rocky bottom.
  • Note: in winter (1 January - 15 March and 1 November - 31 December), fishing is banned within 250 m upstream and downstream of bridges with piers in the riverbed, and within 250 m upstream of reservoir dams.

Step by step

  1. 1

Tie on the leader. Join the fluorocarbon to the braid with an FG or Albright knot, then tie on the jig head with a Palomar.

  2. 2

Choose the weight. The jig should reach the bottom 3-5 seconds after the line goes tight; in deep water or current, go heavier.

  3. 3

Feel the bottom. Cast, keep the line tight and count until it hits the bottom: the line goes slack and the rod tip straightens.

  4. 4

Retrieve in steps. 1-3 quick turns of the reel handle, then pause until the jig drops back to the bottom; most takes come on the drop.

  5. 5

Strike immediately. At a sharp tap, or when the line stops on the drop, strike short and firm.

  6. 6

Playing the fish. Steadily, without letting up; if you release the zander, do it quickly, keeping it in the water.

Common mistakes

  • A jig that's too light (you can't feel the bottom) or too heavy (it drops like a stone and snags).
  • Slack line on the drop: you don't feel the take.
  • A blunt hook: test it on your fingernail after every snag.
  • Fishing only by day in high summer, when zander sit deep and eat little.

Rules on natural waters

  • Zander

    Minimum size: 40 cm

Species closed season: 20 March - 7 June

General closed season: 9 April - 7 June (the periods differ on border waters and in the Danube Delta)

Daily limit: At most 5 kg of fish per day, or a single fish if it's over 5 kg.

The rules above are for natural waters (rivers, lakes, the Danube), where you also need a permit. On a private lake the lake's rules apply: many are catch & release or have their own limits.

For information only, not guaranteed legal advice. There are many local exceptions (Danube Delta, border waters, catch-and-release sections) not covered here. Always check the official ANADSPA (formerly ANPA) source before fishing.

Frequently asked questions

What does a “stepped” jig retrieve mean?

The lure rises off the bottom with a few turns of the reel handle and sinks during the pause, like a fish feeding on the bottom. The hop and the drop imitate prey, and zander usually strike on the drop.

How do I lose fewer jigs on rocks?

Use the lightest jig that still reaches the bottom, hold the rod tip higher and, on a very rocky bottom, try an offset hook with the lure rigged so the point doesn't stick out.

What is the minimum size for zander, and when is the closed season?

In natural waters, the legal minimum size is 40 cm; smaller fish must be released. It has its own closed season: 20 March - 7 June. The general closed season also applies on natural waters: 9 April - 7 June.
